The S.T.A.R.S. ProgramThe STARS International (Scuba Training At-Risk Students) program was modeled after two years of field-tested pilot programs in the greater Chicago, Illinois area in 2005 and 2006. STARS International is focused solely on at-risk youth (ages 13-17) with the goal to provide a positive diversionary activity incorporating scuba diving which reinforces and supports local academic achievement and career development. Candidates must be predetermined to exude traits qualifying them as “at-risk” teens and be nominated by local or civic authority figure. STARS International encompasses an eighteen month curriculum spanning two academic years. The first 12 months of the program target development of the candidate’s diving skills and interests, whereas the subsequent 6 months leverage participant’s confidence and leadership skills to assist development of new candidates.
Although the STARS program models an academic classroom, participants are held
to higher standards than traditional schools, demanding high energy levels with
firm expectations that are required to sustain their involvement. The
participant’s inner commitment and self motivation as well as parent/guardian’s
support is necessary to chart their new course to a positive life strategy. The
participant’s physical endurance level and personal energy limit will be
stretched and tested every week of this unique program.
Our MissionDeliver a comprehensive teenage youth development program intended to benefit teenagers during pivotal maturing years when positive influence can best strengthen and mold personal character. Serve as a catalyst to foster community collaboration strategically redirecting participants towards new-positive opportunities where they can focus their personal energy and make progress towards lifelong educational and career goals.
Company ProfileThe program consists of a base 12 month curriculum with participants achieving the potential of being selected to serve 6 additional months in the capacity of a mentor to incoming participants in the following year’s program. Scuba is the theme or “vehicle” used in the program enabling us to deliver an additional 12 elements of material which support the participant’s current academic success and preparedness to enter adulthood. Goals of the program include but are not limited to improved; academic grades, self control, attendance and punctuality, life strategies, career interests, leadership, health and decision making.
